LAWYERS LOOKING to work offshore should do considerable research into the market they plan to work in before they leave, according to a well-travelled partner from law firm Deacons.

In an exclusive interview, Deacons lawyer Kerry Ryan told Lawyers Weekly she would advise lawyers wanting an international career to understand the market they are entering from both a cultural and business perspective, including what is involved in working there, who the key players are, and what firms are the leaders in their fields.

A frequent business traveller to India, Indonesia and Singapore, Ryan also recommends that lawyers learn the language and get some experience in Australia before they head off overseas, particularly in Asia. “It’s very challenging once you get over there, and having some good solid experience here helps,” she said.

For the full interview with Kerry Ryan, see The Whole Truth on page 22. this week.

We're evolving — and so should your insights. Heads up — Lawyers Weekly is going premium from 1 May for just $5 a month. Stay informed without missing a beat. More information coming soon.
