Paralegals in the US are about to receive a pretty well organised pat on the back. ‘Spotlight on Paralegals’ will celebrate the “exceptional” contribution of the “Successful Legal Assistant”. And, the event marks two years of monthly meetings designed to address issues in the paralegal profession. Folklaw wonders if the group has been so analysed and celebrated in this country, or are we missing something? Here is the press release about a reception you apparently don’t want to miss, even if it is the US.

On June 24, 2004 the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association will host a reception you will not want to miss. "Spotlight on Paralegals" is a special event for attorneys, judges, legal administrators and legal assistants to celebrate the exceptional contribution of the "Successful Legal Assistant." The festivity is designed to acknowledge Detroit paralegals for their dedication and achievements. All members of the DMBA are invited to attend.

The evening will start with a one-hour strolling reception in the Century Grill at the Gem Theatre. Appetizers and cocktails will be served. Participants will toast two years of membership with the DMBA and more than thirty years of invaluable contributions by legal assistants.

Immediately following the reception an assembly in the theatre will open with an introduction from DMBA President Elect, Louis Theros, Member, Dickinson Wright. Following will be a keynote address from the Honorable Marilyn J. Kelly, Supreme Court Justice. Peter N. Tassie, Managing Counsel, Ford Motor Company and William J. Parsons, Legal Administrator, Miller Canfield Paddock and Stone will address the benefits of utilizing legal assistants in the law practice. Linda S. Jevahirian, President, Legal Search & Management, Inc., will highlight the evolution of legal assistants in a historical perspective.

The event is being sponsored by some of the most influential law firms and corporate legal departments in the city. Gold sponsors include General Motors Corporation, Ford Motor Corporation, Butzel Long and Miller Canfield Paddock and Stone. Silver sponsors include Dykema Gossett and Dickinson Wright. Bronze sponsors include Pepper Hamilton, Honigman Miller Schwarz and Cohn, Plunkett & Cooney, Keller Thoma and Kitch Drutchas Wagner DeNardis & Valitutti.

The generous contributions are indicative of the legal community at large. This event carries an important message: Legal services are optimized by enthusiastic legal assistants. Paralegal utilization creates an environment rich with success and it is time to say thank you to these hard-working professionals.

This event marks two years of monthly meetings designed to address issues in the paralegal profession. Linda S. Jevahirian, Chair of the Legal Assistants Committee and President, Legal Search & Management, Inc., created a forum that approaches some of the more universal concerns faced by legal assistants. The group focuses on how paralegals operate in the work place and what resources are available for solving matters that are not addressed by traditional classes.
