Law Week got off to a cracking start on Monday (16 May) with a surprisingly impressive musical appearance from our very own freshly appointed NSW Attorney-General Greg Smith.

Despite the chilly early morning autumn air, Sydney's Martin Place came alive with the dulcet tones of Smith who - with his band of mostly retired legal eagles of a certain age - delighted a small but passionate crowd with fabulous renditions of Johnny Cash and John Denver ditties, to name a few.

Now, Folklaw will admit that Smith was not immediately recognisable with microphone in hand, busting out 'Take me home, country road' and stirring up the crowd with his gregarious on-stage demeanour and unusual dance moves.

But when it finally dawned on us that the front-man sporting a rather homely non-rockstar-like jacket (his fellow band members tried to get him to take it off, apparently) was indeed Smith, Folklaw was very, very impressed.

The Tokens, as the band is called, apparently spend most of their time entertaining oldies at retirement homes and performing at charity gigs, but the opportunity to strut their stuff at Law Week's Law Expo proved to be an opportunity not to be passed up, and they rocked!

As the applause from the band's performance died down, Smith hung up the mic and mingled with the crowd - pats on the back coming left, right and centre before he rushed off for a cabinet meeting.

Folklaw is waiting for the announcement that - a la Johnny Cash - Smith might belt out a tune from behind the big walls. Based on today's performance, Greg Smith Live from Long Bay would be a sure fire way for the Liberal Party to raise some funds.
