A lawyer in the USA has created false invoices to buy NBA tickets.
The Spruce Head Forum website reports that Mikel Jones, a Florida-based personal injury lawyer, and his wife, Dona Jones, were found guilty of falsely obtaining hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of credit for work-related expenses.
The Spruce Head Forum said that Jones, who also had an office in Philadelphia, obtained credit from a New York venture capital fund for expenses related to his practice as a lawyer. The Jones' then created false invoices to pay off credit card debts and to also purchase tickets to watch the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA.
Prosecutors alleged that the entrepreneurial couple managed to obtain more than $350,000 using fraudulent invoices throughout 2008 and 2009.
Jones, originally from Philadelphia, eschewed purchasing tix to either the Orlando Magic or LeBron James' team, the Miami Heat, to support the struggling 76ers, who have not won the NBA title for over 25 years.
Courtside tickets to the Wells Fargo Centre, the home of the 76ers, cost around $120, while the cheap seats in the nose bleed section go for as little as $15.
While Folklaw has a soft spot for Philadelphia, the city of brotherly love that has produced cultural icons such as Noam Chomsky, John Coltrane and Bill Cosby, Jones' fondness for getting back to his home town and catching a game has cost him dearly.
He was convicted of conspiracy, money laundering and 28 counts of mail fraud and wire fraud. Dona Jones was convicted of money laundering, conspiracy and 14 counts of wire fraud.
The Jones' are due to be sentenced in February.
