Western Australia’s judiciary is set to welcome three new appointments across the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal.
Western Australia’s top courts are set for a boost, with three experienced legal figures appointed to the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court in a move that will bolster the state’s judiciary.
Justice Stephen Lemonis has been appointed to the WA Court of Appeal, while Judge Tania Jeyamohan and barrister Steven Wong SC have been appointed as judges of the WA Supreme Court.
All three appointments took effect on 10 August.
Justice Lemonis will step up to the Court of Appeal after three years on the Supreme Court general division bench, having been appointed to the Supreme Court in 2023.
He will fill the vacancy left by Justice Stephen Hall, who stepped down from the Court of Appeal to take on the role of deputy commissioner of the Corruption and Crime Commission.
The appointment marks another step in Justice Lemonis’ more than three-decade legal career, which has spanned the District Court, Supreme Court, and private practice.
Before joining the Supreme Court, he served as a WA District Court judge from February 2019 to June 2023, predominantly presiding over criminal matters.
His career in private practice saw him serve as a principal at several firms, where he developed expertise across commercial litigation, white-collar and corporate crime, regulatory investigations, insolvency, and criminal proceedings.
Meanwhile, Judge Jeyamohan will step into the Supreme Court general division vacancy created by Justice Lemonis’ move, following a year on the District Court bench.
Her 25-year legal career has spanned private practice and the State Solicitor’s Office, where she built expertise across commercial litigation and arbitration, contracts and disputes, state agreements, class actions, and statutory interpretation.
Speaking about the appointments, Attorney-General Dr Tony Buti described the trio as highly experienced and respected legal practitioners whose decades of work on complex matters will strengthen Western Australia’s judiciary across both its trial and appellate courts.
“I congratulate Justice Stephen Lemonis, Judge Tania Jeyamohan, and Steven Wong SC on their respective appointments to the Supreme Court general division and Court of Appeal,” A-G Buti said.
“All three are highly experienced and respected legal practitioners who have worked on complex matters over their careers and will bolster our state’s judiciary at the trial and appellate levels.”
A-G Buti added: “I thank Justice Lemonis, Judge Jeyamohan, and Mr Wong for their willingness to serve the WA community in these important judicial roles and wish them every success.”
