Alison Legge and Trevor McKenna have been appointed judges to the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (Division 2) (FCFCOA), strengthening the court’s benches in Melbourne and Hobart.

Legge will join the Melbourne Registry, and McKenna will take up a position in the Hobart Registry of Division 2.

They commenced their duties on 19 October.

The addition of the two judges followed an open call for expressions of interest, in which applicants were considered by an advisory panel of respected individuals.

The new appointments come after the FCFCOA bolstered its judicial ranks by appointing three judges in July across the Hobart and Brisbane registries.

Legge was admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria and of the High Court of Australia in 1987.

She has been a senior judicial registrar at the Federal Court of Australia since 2021.

McKenna was admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of NSW and the Supreme Court of Tasmania in 2008.

He was also admitted as a solicitor of the High Court of Australia in 2010 and the Supreme Court of Western Australia in 2011, before being called to the Tasmanian Bar in 2023.

Speaking on the new appointments, Attorney-General Michelle Rowland MP recognised the judges’ service to the Australian community.

“I congratulate Ms Legge and Mr McKenna on their appointment to Division 2 of the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (FCFCOA),” Rowland said.

“The FCFCOA (Division 2) has broad federal jurisdiction in areas such as consumer law, administrative law, and family law.

“I thank Ms Legge and Mr McKenna for their willingness to serve the Australian community.”
