Judge Ross Hudson has been appointed president of the Children’s Court of NSW for a five-year term, commencing 22 November.

Judge Hudson will take over from Judge Ellen Skinner, who has served as president of the Children’s Court of NSW for five years.

A judicial officer for more than a decade, Judge Hudson has served in the Local Court since 2015, before his appointment to the District Court in 2024.

Throughout his tenure on the bench, he has presided over complex cases, such as bail hearings, sentencing, and serious criminal trials.

During his tenure at the Local Court, he served across both regional and metropolitan areas, managing the active Taree circuit where he oversaw care and protection matters alongside youth criminal cases.

Before entering the judiciary, Judge Hudson worked as a solicitor at O’Brien Hudson Solicitors, concentrating on criminal law matters.

Having handled proceedings across multiple jurisdictions, including the supreme, district, local, coroners, and children’s courts, he acquired a comprehensive understanding of judicial processes and the functions of key participants in court proceedings.

In his role as president of the Children’s Court, Judge Hudson will be responsible for the court’s administration, as well as contributing to judicial education, liaising with external stakeholders and hearing cases.

Speaking on the appointment, Attorney-General Michael Daley recognised Judge Hudson’s experience across the courts.

“I am pleased to announce the appointment of Judge Hudson as president of the Children’s Court,” Daley said.

“He has more than a decade of judicial experience across the Local and District courts and is deeply familiar with the legal and social issues affecting children and young people.

“I congratulate Judge Hudson and thank Judge Ellen Skinner for her hard work and dedication in this role over the last five years.”
