At Perth Children’s Court, specially trained dogs to support vulnerable participants have been recognised in celebration of a five-year milestone of the Justice Facility Dog Program this year.
In partnership with Guide Dogs WA, the Justice Facility Dog Program has increased in size from one pioneering dog to four.
The first dog, named Winston, joined the court in 2021 but has since retired, with his legacy continuing through the current team of facility dogs, which play an integral role in encouraging communication, participation, and engagement in court proceedings.
The program has grown beyond just Winston, with the addition of four justice facility dogs: Velvet, Red, Perron, and Mille.
Being selected for their gentle and calm demeanour, the dogs are aimed to provide a sense of comfort and reassurance to children, young people and families in navigating the justice system.
The dogs attend the children’s court in Perth four days each week, for up to one and a half hours each time, alongside a trained handler.
The focus on dogs goes beyond the Children’s Court in Perth, with the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (FCFCOA) in NSW and Brisbane also adding specially trained dogs to their respective courts in recent times.
According to research conducted by Edith Cowan University, the presence of facility dogs fosters a reassuring environment within courts, helping participants experience lower levels of stress and anxiety.
Attorney-General the Honourable Dr Tony Buti recognised the importance of guide dogs within the courts and acknowledged the program’s success.
“For many children and families, attending court can be an overwhelming experience. These remarkable dogs provide comfort and reassurance when it is needed most, helping to create a calmer and more supportive atmosphere,” Buti said.
“We know that when people feel less stressed and anxious, they are better able to participate in court proceedings, communicate effectively, and engage with the process.
“Over the past five years, the program has become a valued part of the Perth Children’s Court experience, and I thank everyone who has contributed to its success, including Children’s Court president His Honour Judge Hylton Quail for his ongoing support.
“I also acknowledge Guide Dogs WA and the dedicated handlers whose commitment and expertise have helped make this initiative such a lasting success.”
