Michael Patane (pictured) rejoined the taxation practice of Clayton Utz in Brisbane.

At the ATO, Patane held various senior positions including Acting Deputy Chief Tax Counsel, Indirect Taxes and Senior Tax Counsel to the High-Income Individuals and Project Wickenby Objections. He was responsible for providing technical leadership on various strategic litigation matters.

Patane was most recently a partner of accounting firm Deloitte and Deloitte Lawyers.  He brings a blend of corporate, property, commercial law and tax experience, and is well regarded in the industry for his strong emphasis on technical interpretation, compliance, administration and litigation.

Taxation partner Philip Bisset has also recently relocated to the Brisbane office of Clayton Utz from Perth.  Having been based in Perth for eight years, Bisset has extensive experience across many facets of revenue law and taxation, particularly for energy and resources clients.

Bisset worked extensively with various industry bodies to assist with submissions in response to the ongoing Australian tax reform process. He is a specialist in issues relating to MRRT and has been advising on the PRRT tax provisions since their inception in 1990. 

He was the key adviser to Bass Strait Producers in the Gascor and Gen Vic PRRT gas price arbitrations and has also held senior tax and legal positions with Exxon and Rio Tinto.
