BLAKE Dawson has hired two Gilbert + Tobin partners to its ranks in a bid to bolster its corporate practice ahead of the full merger with Ashurst in March.

Garry Besson and Gary Lawler, both leading M&A lawyers, join the Sydney practice.

In 2011 Besson was voted by peers as Sydney Lawyer of the Year for mergers and acquisitions by Best Lawyers and named Australian Dealmaker of the Year at the 2011 Lawyers Weekly Awards. Gary Lawler was named as Sydney Lawyer of the Year for Corporate/Governance in 2011 by Best Lawyers.

Both were recognised as as leading individuals in corporate and M&A in Australia by Chambers Global.

National head of Blake Dawson's M&A team, Marie McDonald said she has had experienced working on the other sides of deals against the new duo.

"I have first hand knowledge of the great counsel they give to their clients, and I very much look forward to them being on our team."

Blake Dawson's corporate practice leader, Nick Terry said: "In the past 12 months, we have appointed 10 partners to our corporate team, further strengthening and enhancing our top-tier practice."
