L’Estrange worked in a range of senior roles during his eight years with ANZ, including spending two years in London as the bank’s managing director for Europe and America.

Prior to his role with ANZ, L’Estrange spent 23 years in private practice with Allens, where he led the litigation group. He was also the managing partner of Allens’ predecessor firm, Allen Allen & Hemsley, for three years, from 1993 to 1996.

Following his departure from ANZ at the end of 2010, L’Estrange founded the L'Estrange Group, a law firm focusing on litigation and dispute resolution, and an advisory firm, L’Estrange Advisory.

Chris Ahern, the partner-in-charge of Jones Day’s Sydney office, welcomed the appointment and said: “We are delighted to be adding someone of Tim’s extensive skills and experience to assist our global disputes clients.

“His experience in commercial disputes and corporate governance, combined with his intimate knowledge of the practical demands on boards that these issues raise, make him a unique resource for our clients.”

L’Estrange has worked for some of Australia’s major listed companies in the areas of strategic litigation and corporate governance.

Tim Cullen, the head of Jones Day’s global disputes practice, said the appointment “marks another important step forward in Jones Day’s global disputes practice, and a continuation and expansion of our critical mass in Australia and around the world”.

L’Estrange said Jones Day’s geographic reach and “depth of experienced lawyers” were the main drivers in his decision to join the firm.

In addition to his experience in disputes and corporate governance, L’Estrange was also the inaugural permanent secretary of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Ocean Division), and he is currently the deputy president of the Melbourne International Festival of the Arts.
