Maddocks has announced the appointment of a former Commonwealth Department of Health general counsel to its Canberra office.

Chris Reid (pictured) has spent the last eight years as general counsel and first assistant secretary at the Commonwealth Department of Health.

Over his 31-year-long career he has advised a range of other government departments and agencies including the Department of Education, Science and Training, the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority and the Insurance and Superannuation Commission.

Mr Reid’s practice at Maddocks will focus on government law, administrative law, statutory interpretation, and litigation and dispute resolution.

“This year is obviously going to be a significant year in the Commonwealth sector, with an impending federal election and the potential for key policy decisions around taxation, healthcare, defence and education,” said Simonetta Astolfi, Maddocks Commonwealth sector leader and Canberra partner in charge.

“What Chris will bring to our team is an understanding not only of the current policy landscape, but also the issues and demands that are front of mind for decision makers within government departments and statutory authorities.”

Maddocks recently appointed partner Andrew Pitney and senior associate Louisa Nuccitelli to its Melbourne office from HWL Ebsworth.
