Ebsworth & Ebsworth has appointed two new partners — Mark Diamond in the firm’s workplace relations team and Alison Choy Flannigan in its commercial and health practice. Diamond has extensive experience in employment law, making him a “strong addition” to the firm, Ebsworth & Ebsworth said, during a time when WorkChoices poses significant legal issues for business. Choy Flannigan is a commercial health lawyer with more than 15 years experience in corporate and commercial law areas that include biotechnology, medical negligence, legislative interpretation, and commercial litigation.

The International Legal Services Advisory Council has announced the appointment of Andrew Rogers QC to the position of deputy chairman of the council.
After expanding her expertise in estate planning with a major bank, Joanne O’Brien is returning to Carne Reidy Herd as an Associate. O’Brien will continue her work with Brian Herd in the specialist area of elder law.
Michael Dwyer has been appointed as local managing partner of Sparke Helmore’s Adelaide office, replacing Julie McIntyre who has been at the helm for five years and who will return to running the firm’s workplace relations practice in South Australia.
Dwyer has over eight years’ experience in personal injuries litigation and specialises in workers compensation for self-insurers, specialist insurers, and public and statutory authorities, including local municipalities and semi-government authorities.
Tom Chau was appointed, effective 1 April, as a corporate law partner with Herbert Smith LLP in Hong Kong. Chau specialises in advising mainland Chinese corporations and leading investment banks operating in the Peoples’ Republic of China. He advises clients such as Huaneng Power International and Merrill Lynch. In 2005 he advised China Construction Bank on its IPO. At the same time, Herbert Smith announced the promotion of 10 other lawyers to its partnership, taking the number of partners in the firm to 217.
