Good leadership requires effective communication, collaboration and resilience. These are skills that ultimately will give you the flexibility to better respond to the needs and the demands of clients and colleagues – and achieve better outcomes.

Here are five strategies you can start implementing today to build stronger leadership skills:

Start thinking like a leader

Taking on new responsibilities can be daunting, but there are ways to make it more manageable. The key is to start small and continue flexing your leadership muscle over time. For example, you could organise your next team event or put your hand up to help lead the next work-related project.

There’s no “I” in “team”

By continuously working on your ability to collaborate effectively, you can position yourself as a strong, adaptable and highly valued team member. Start by employing active listening skills and always aim to be clear and concise in your communication style. You can do this by asking yourself, “what is my core message, and how can I communicate it in the clearest way possible”.

View conflict as an agent of change

It’s a natural reaction to avoid situations where people with different opinions might clash. Conflict can be a powerful catalyst for change – but you need the proper tools to facilitate it. For example, don’t fixate on who is right and wrong. Instead, focus on constructive problem-solving and find ways to combine the different viewpoints.

Create opportunities to unleash creativity

Creativity is a sought-after trait in lawyers and leaders. It’s a powerful tool to think outside of the box” and find innovative solutions to problems. Going for a walk during your lunch break or organising informal meetings in new environments are great to kickstart your own or your team’s creative thinking.

Focus on progress

It’s never been more critical for successful lawyers – or leaders – to develop resilience. Ultimately, resilience helps us turn setbacks into opportunities to learn and grow. To build your resilience, start incorporating quick reflections into your day. This will help you sort through thoughts, observations, and experiences – and to acknowledge the progress you’ve made. Regular reflections will also help shape your future decisions and actions and embrace a growth mindset.
