Jon Ireland (pictured) has joined DLA Piper as the new head of its Australian practice, bringing his expertise in asset management, financial services, and investments.

He started in his new role last week, on 9 October.

Speaking about his new role, Mr Ireland said: “I’m excited to be joining DLA Piper’s market-leading investment management and funds offering.

“Investment management and funds is an increasingly global sector driven by cross-border funds flows and investment and, in my view, the global advisory teams will be those best placed to deliver exceptional results for clients, which is what I’m after.”

Mr Ireland was a partner at NRF for almost six years (and for nearly nine years at Henry Davis York before it became part of NRF in 2017) prior to joining DLA Piper. He has also worked at Challenger Limited as a senior legal counsel and at MinterEllison as a senior lawyer.

DLA Piper Australian managing partner Amber Matthews said: “Jon is an important addition to our thriving investment management and funds (IM&F) offering in Australia and globally. He combines strong technical knowledge of the local legal environment and global market with a solution-driven approach.

“Jon’s appointment will also complement our strong global offering, which positions us to support our clients across the full life cycle of fund formations, deals and transactions around the world.”

The firm’s head of corporate in Australia, Shane Bilardi, said Mr Ireland’s appointment will boost the firm’s corporate offerings.

“Jon is one of the market leaders in Australia for investment management and funds and, together with Emma Kendall and Martin Jamieson, will give us one of Australia’s leading investment management and funds teams,” he said.

“We believe that the shift from public markets to private capital is a persistent one, and we’re keen to ensure that DLA Piper remains at the forefront of this shift.

“Jon’s experience advising fund investors and sponsors on investments, co-investment, fundraising, secondaries, mergers and acquisitions, as well as fund formation across all asset classes and his work with global asset managers, sovereign wealth funds, superannuation and pension funds and other institutional clients on cross-border investment will position us exceptionally well in this space.”
