Orla McCoy has started with G+T, following over 14 years with Clayton Utz, including almost a decade as a partner in that firm’s restructuring and insolvency practice. Ms McCoy commenced with G+T yesterday (4 December), following reports of her resignation from CU in mainstream media outlets in July.

She joins G+T as a partner and will serve as co-head of its restructuring and insolvency team from its Sydney office.

The firm noted, in a statement, that Ms McCoy has brought across her “talented team”, including special counsel Mikhail Glavac, senior lawyer Tom Gardner, and lawyer Jing Zhang, as well as an executive assistant.

The news followed the departure from CU by partners Timothy Sackar and Jillian McAleese in August to BigLaw rival White & Case. As reported at the time by Lawyers Weekly, White & Case launched a financial restructuring and insolvency practice in Australia with the arrival of the pair.

It also followed a series of team movements across Australia’s larger firms in the past month, including a team of 11 leaving Clyde & Co for Hamilton Locke, Meridian launching in Canberra with a team from HWL Ebsworth, HFW taking five partners and 15 lawyers from MinterEllison, Hamilton Locke adding another five partners from four BigLaw rivals, Hall & Wilcox hiring a team from Holding Redlich, and Thomson Geer nabbing a team from Macpherson Kelley.

Her team commenced with the firm in recent weeks.

She provides G+T a “strengthened offering to serve clients at a critical time”, the firm went on, given uncertain economic conditions and heightened activity in the restructuring and insolvency market.

Peter Bowden, G+T partner and head of restructuring and insolvency said: “We are delighted to welcome Orla to the G+T restructuring and insolvency team and it is a real privilege to have her co-lead the team with me.”

“With a proven record of navigating Australia’s largest corporate insolvency and debt restructuring matters, her appointment is a strategic addition to strengthen our existing capabilities in the space.”

Ms McCoy added: “I am excited to be joining Gilbert + Tobin as a partner in the restructuring and insolvency team and co-head with Pete. The changes in the market represent opportunities and challenges for our clients and I am looking forward to being part of the highly regarded G+T team, working alongside partners Pete Bowden, Anna Schwartz, and their team.”
