1. Reprimand for speeding solicitor who made false declarations

 
 

A solicitor was reprimanded over his failure to disclose a number of traffic violations to the Queensland Law Society, with a tribunal finding the conduct “goes to the very heart” of the ability to practise.

2. MinterEllison names 12 new partners

One of Australia’s biggest legal and consulting firms has appointed 12 new partners across six of its offices, effective 1 July.

3. Thomson Geer promotes 55, including 3 to partner and 1 to principal

Following a year of substantial growth – in which national law firm Thomson Geer took teams from five different BigLaw rivals – the firm has now elevated 55 lawyers to more senior roles, including three to its partnership and one to principal.

4. Firms must resist the rise of managerialism, Justice Lee says

Managerialism may have created the appearance of sleek, optimised law firms, but Justice Michael Lee said the ideology is “theatre” that has eroded professionalism and blinded once-ambitious and independent lawyers with billing targets and efficiency goals.

5. Maddocks promotes 71

National law firm Maddocks has elevated three lawyers to its partnership, as well as 58 lawyers and 10 shared services professionals to more senior roles, ahead of the new financial year.

6. KWM promotes 83

Following its appointment of four new partners earlier this month, global Law firm King & Wood Mallesons has appointed nine new special counsel and 60 new senior associates, and also made 14 promotions in its shared services team.

7. HWL Ebsworth promotes 102, including 6 to partner

National law firm HWL Ebsworth has appointed six new partners and elevated 96 staff members across the firm’s national network.

8. Police lawyer’s misconduct a risk to investigation, tribunal says

A police legal officer and ethics lecturer failed to overturn a finding that she was “careless and incompetent” when she permitted an unqualified person to witness an affidavit and created a risk the conduct would undermine the results of a police investigation.

9. Prison sentences for sovereign citizens who defamed solicitor

Sovereign citizens who defamed a solicitor in emails to high-profile members of the profession will spend a month behind bars because they tried to have the matter aired in a faux “Common Law Court”.

10. Mills Oakley promotes 79, including 4 to partner

National BigLaw firm Mills Oakley has appointed four new partners, 13 new special counsel, 22 new senior associates, and 40 new associates.
