On 1 September 2025, global law firm King & Wood Mallesons welcomed indirect tax expert Andrew Sommer to the firm as its new senior consultant.
Sommer is an indirect taxation expert who has experience advising on tax matters with a specialty in complex GST issues.
In a statement, the firm said: “Andrew enjoys a reputation as Australia’s most sought-after specialist advisor for public and private corporations and high-net-worth individuals to manage complex GST and other indirect taxation matters and disputes.”
KWM managing partner (clients) and head of tax, Darren McClafferty, said: “Andrew’s appointment bolsters an already formidable practice team, adding a rare specialty capability to our collaborative corporate taxation advisory offering.”
The firm’s taxation practice provides strategic and integrated advice on a variety of commercial tax matters, ranging from corporate to disputes. It has advised some of the largest multinationals in the world, along with a diverse range of companies in the ASX 100. This diversity of clients was from a variety of sectors such as technology, energy and resources, finance, real estate, and retail.
This news arose after KWM’s appointment of four new partners in June, along with the promotion of 83 across its legal and shared services team, which included 69 lawyers who were elevated to more senior roles.
The firm said: “Andrew brings 24 years’ partnership-level experience and expertise across sectors, including retail, food industry, mining and energy, aviation, financial services and real estate-focused clients.”
KWM made this move following another acquisition from Clayton Utz in May, when the firm poached private equity specialist Niro Ananda to become a partner in its regional private capital team.
“I am excited to see his incredible expertise in indirect taxation structures and disputes deliver real value to our clients and capability among our people,” McClafferty said.
