National law firm Sparke Helmore has appointed a partner to its specialty lines insurance team, bringing with her a team of two lawyers from rival firm HWL Ebsworth.
Sophie Pennington (pictured) has joined Sparke Helmore as a partner in its specialty lines insurance team, effective 14 October 2025.
Before joining the national firm, Pennington spent nearly eight years at rival HWL Ebsworth, where she served as a partner.
She is recognised as a specialist in health law, bringing extensive experience advising public and private hospitals, medical practitioners, and specialty healthcare services on legal and risk matters.
Joining the firm with Pennington are two lawyers from HWL Ebsworth, with all three set to be based in Sparke Helmore’s Melbourne office.
Health group leader Marie-Clare Elder stated how Pennington’s appointment strengthens the firm’s health law capabilities, noting her experience covers both local and national health sectors.
“We are excited to welcome Sophie and her team to Sparke Helmore,” Elder said.
“She brings a wealth of experience to our market-leading health team, deepening our local and national coverage and reinforcing our commitment to the broader health sector both in Australia and internationally.”
Speaking on her appointment, Pennington said: “I am passionate about health law and believe it’s imperative to strike a balance between recognising the incredible work of health professionals and ensuring patient safety. Joining a firm with such a strong culture while continuing to do the work I love is a win-win”.
This news comes after the firm named five new partners across key practice areas at the start of September, promoted 10 to special counsel and 10 to senior associate at the start of July and added a corporate and commercial partner from Mills Oakley in June.
