Hamilton Locke has welcomed a construction specialist lawyer to its partnership, joining from fellow BigLaw firm K&L Gates.
Justin O’Callaghan has joined Hamilton Locke as a partner at the firm’s Brisbane office, joining its national construction team.
Providing strategic counsel across the entire initial phase of project life cycles, O’Callaghan specialises in the procurement and delivery of large-scale, high-value developments in the real estate, energy, resources, and infrastructure sectors.
Along with this, O’Callaghan acts for major project proponents composed of principals, sponsors, developers, and contractors, while collaborating with general counsel, senior legal practitioners, and executives to steer the strategic direction of significant capital projects.
It’s not the first instance in the past year that Hamilton Locke has poached partners and teams from K&L Gates, with the firm bringing across four partners and 10 team members in July.
Throughout his career, O’Callaghan has provided critical guidance on major Australian developments, including the recent design and build of a $500 million automated site in Queensland.
Additionally, he supported a $1.3 billion solar farm and BESS initiative in NSW, currently designated on the federal government’s National Renewable Energy Priority List, and steered the implementation of an extensive fibre-optic network throughout Western Australia.
Previous projects of his included advising on the Powering Sydney’s Future to secure the city’s electricity supply, the Clarke Creek Wind Farm in central Queensland and the Howard Smith Wharves precinct in Brisbane.
Hamilton Locke managing partner Brit Ibanez said O’Callaghan’s appointment highlighted the substantial prospects emerging from Australia’s continuous stream of major infrastructure initiatives and capital expenditure.
“Justin’s transactional construction expertise strengthens our construction, infrastructure and new energy capability, giving clients an experienced adviser who can help them navigate the complexities of delivering major projects nationally,” Ibanez said.
O’Callaghan will join Hamilton Locke’s Brisbane office, with the firm situated in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, and Auckland.
