An experienced finance partner has joined DLA Piper’s Sydney office, strengthening the firm’s structured finance, derivatives, and securitisation capabilities across the Asia-Pacific region.
Ryan Iskandar has joined BigLaw firm DLA Piper as a partner in its global finance practice, based in Sydney.
Joining from Mallesons, where he was a special counsel, Iskandar brings a wealth of experience in highly successful derivatives, securitisation, and structured finance practice, advising fund managers, asset managers, banks, and other financial institutions on complex markets.
Recently, DLA Piper added an experienced partner from Watson Farley & Williams to power up its renewable energy practice as a special counsel.
This followed a series of promotions across its national network in July, whereby the firm elevated 11 legal and business professionals.
Iskandar’s appointment as partner looks to strengthen the firm’s structured finance, derivatives, and securitisation offering across the region, while connecting clients with lawyers from across the firm’s global platform and groups, including tax, financial regulatory, funds and restructuring.
In what is a constantly evolving industry, Iskandar recognised the constant changes in finance and law.
“The financing markets have seen many unprecedented trends and changes in recent times, including the rise of private credit, AI, and sustainable financing, most of which are global and extraterritorial in nature,” Iskandar said to Lawyers Weekly.
“Clients increasingly require not just local expertise, but the ability to support them across a number of different jurisdictions and areas of expertise.
“As a global law firm, DLA Piper is very well positioned to service clients operating in this increasingly complex landscape.”
Speaking on Iskandar’s appointment, Colin Wilson, global co-lead of DLA Piper’s finance practice commented on his invaluable experience, which will add to the firm’s practice across the world.
“Ryan brings a wealth of global experience that will elevate our practice not only in Australia, but across Asia-Pacific,” Wilson said.
“With a strong structured finance practice, Ryan has built an impressive track record advising clients on complex and innovative transactions across multiple markets.
“His arrival further strengthens our ability to support clients on their most strategic financing matters and reflects our continued investment in key growth areas across the region.”
Meanwhile, DLA Piper’s Australian country managing partner, Shane Bilardi, added: “We are continuing to strategically invest in exceptional talent and capabilities across Australia.
“With Ryan’s appointment, we not only gain a highly accomplished structured finance practitioner, but also a lawyer with deep international experience and a strong track record advising clients on complex financing transactions.
“His skillset and experience will be invaluable as we continue to support clients on their most significant and complex transactions.”
Iskandar commenced his role as a partner in DLA Piper’s global finance practice on 8 October 2026.
