Right now. With the world recovering from a deep global recession and with law firms in Asia, the Middle East and London growing an appetite for Australian trained lawyers, now is the perfect time to put in train a strategy for overseas.

If Asia, in particular Hong Kong, is your destination of choice, not only is it necessary for you to ensure you have top tier training in transferable areas such as corporate/M&A, finance or energy and resources, but Chinese language skills are equally important. Additionally, an understanding of Chinese business culture will ensure you do well in any interview.

For those lawyers who are attracted to London or the Middle East, again it is imperative that you are practising in areas that are transferable and you're gaining experience from a leading firm.

If not, steps need to be taken (eg making the move to a top 10 firm) so that you are in the best position to secure the growing number of overseas opportunities.
