Thomson Playford has appointed David Lieberman as a consultant in its national corporate practice group. Lieberman, who is based in the firm’s Sydney office, has more than 35 years experience in the legal profession, with particular expertise in the field of competition and consumer protection. Until recently, he worked as special counsel and consultant to another law firm and prior to this position held the role of Commissioner for the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission from 1995-1998.

Deacons has announced it will appoint partner Bill Williams and his team to the firm’s Canberra office on 4 October. Joining him will be Ben Rogers, Robyn Kelly and Virginia Hoy. Williams will be a partner in the property, environment, planning construction and engineering group. The firm said he is a highly regarded practitioner in this area and, with his team, will bring considerable attributes to the practice. Williams has significant experience in the Canberra market, having established and managed a Canberra office for a former national firm. He subsequently formed his own firm, Williams Love & Nicoll, and recently set up Williams Lawyers.

Heidi Varela was admitted as a solicitor on 5 September. She joined McInnes Wilson Lawyers in July this year after completing her Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice, Skills and Ethics. Varela will continue to work in the firm’s insurance litigation team.
