Twomey Dispute Lawyers expands with 3 offices in 3 years

Queensland-based firm Twomey Dispute Lawyers began with a single lawyer working from a “shipping container office”. Now the firm has expanded into Brisbane and the Northern Rivers.

Established in late 2019, the Gold Coast-headquartered firm has now opened offices in Brisbane’s Jubilee Place as well as Molesworth Street in Lismore and expects to create several new jobs within the coming months.

The firm’s director, Ben Twomey, said that despite the prevalence of law firms in the area, they were confident Brisbane would welcome their simple formula for practising law differently.

“We are straight-talking litigators who think commercially to resolve disputes in ways that make sense for clients, and who get it done in as short a time as possible,” Mr Twomey commented.

“Our approach to litigation and dispute resolution is unique enough that we have opened three offices in our first three years,” he added.

The Brisbane office brought in two new team members, associate Eliza Walker and senior associate Andrew Suffern, on 13 February, bringing its total workforce to 17 employees.

Mr Twomey explained that it’s not only clients who appreciate the firm’s approach to resolving disputes, but also litigation lawyers.

“Exclusively taking on disputes is a strategy that has worked in our favour, and as the firm has grown, we’ve become an appealing workplace for top-flight litigators, as they get to specialise.

“In court and out of court, we’re resolving disputes as quickly and commercially as possible, and our litigators are not expected to cross-sell clients into other areas of law,” he continued.

“We don’t let anything in the way of chasing results for clients, and this includes maintaining full administration support, so our lawyers can concentrate on their cases rather than getting weighed down with day-to-day operations.

“Having three offices also provides more avenues of flexibility and a change of scenery, as team members have the option of travelling between all three offices.”

The Brisbane and Lismore offices come on the back of the specialist law firm announcing two senior appointments, with Andrea Joyce being promoted to partner and Blake Fowler taking on the role of general manager.

Mr Twomey explained that the business is geared to generate results and resolutions when it comes to disputes and commercial litigation, while creating a more accessible, value-based experience.

“The way a litigation business can run at its most efficient, may not necessarily align with the objectives of another, so we stay in our lane and concentrate on what we do best, which is disputes,” he stated.

“People are starting to realise that specialist lawyers do specialist things; they deal with one aspect of law, and their whole business is built around that one thing they are doing for you.

“If you could make a decision as to whether or not you wanted to go and see a litigation lawyer, most people would prefer not to, but it’s a need rather than a want,” he continued.

“What we do best is create an atmosphere where clients are comfortable with us.

“We’re giving them complicated advice about things they don’t necessarily understand, and it can be difficult for them to make good and informed decisions if they’re in an uncomfortable or intimidating environment.”
