David Chew (pictured) has joined Gilchrist Connell as a principal to strengthen its financial lines and insurance offerings, working from the firm’s Melbourne office.

Before joining the national insurance law firm, Chew held senior leadership roles at several national firms, including serving as a partner at Hall & Wilcox for more than three years and spending nearly 11 years at HWL Ebsworth.

In a statement, Gilchrist Connell said Chew’s appointment reflects the firm’s continued investment in senior talent to meet the evolving needs of clients, while further consolidating its standing in the national insurance market.

Chew brings more than 25 years of experience advising insurers, insureds, and corporate clients on a wide range of financial lines risks, including high-exposure claims, major loss matters, and complex construction and property disputes.

The insurance firm noted that Chew’s practice spans both disputes and advisory work, sharing that he regularly provides guidance on policy interpretation, coverage questions, claims strategy, and loss assessment.

Belinda Cohen, chief executive at Gilchrist Connell, shared how Chew’s experience will strengthen the firm’s Melbourne practice, particularly in financial lines and complex insurance matters.

“David’s depth of expertise in financial lines and complex insurance matters naturally augments our Melbourne offering. He brings a highly practical, client-focused approach that aligns closely with how we support insurers and their insureds,” Cohen said.

“We are thrilled that David has chosen to join Gilchrist Connell and are excited about the value he will bring to our clients.”

This news follows the firm’s promotion of six to special counsel at the start of the year.
