ATTORNEY General, Robert McClelland, has announced 12 new appointments to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal.

New appointees to the Tribunal are Chelsea Walsh as a part-time senior member and Dr Roslyn Blakley and Kathryn Hogan as part-time members.

Stanley Hotop, Graham Friedman, Steven Penglis, Andre Sweidan, Rodney Dunne, Conrad Ermert (Retd), Dr Roderick McRae and Anthony (Gerry) Warner have been reappointed to their present positions.

Egon Fice has been appointed as a senior member having previously been a member of the Tribunal.

Fice, Friedman, Blakley and McRae will be based in Melbourne and Dunne in Adelaide. The others will be based in Perth.

One of the first cases the new recruits will be undertaking in their new roles is the assessment of whether former Guantanamo Bay detainee Mamdouh Habib should be given an Australian passport. The Tribunal has been handed the case for the second time after former foreign minister Alexander Downer refused to issue him a new passport based on adverse security assessment by the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation.

The one-time terror suspect will now be able to take his case for an Australian passport back before the Tribunal.
