Blakes now hires in Shanghai

Despite rumours the firm would be making redundancies in addition to the current 89, The New Lawyer understands Blakes has just recruited a new partner in Shanghai. This follows last week’s news [http://www.thenewlawyer.com.au/article/Blakes-now-hiring-but-in-Jakarta/475065.aspx] that it has a new international partner in Jakarta.

CJ French beckons lawyers back from ‘twilight zone’

In an attempt to get some members of the legal profession determining where they stand, Chief Justice Robert French suggests that in order to become “socially interesting”, intellectual property lawyers need to “seek conceptual clarity about their objectives”. Are they human rights lawyers or economic utilitarians, he asks.

G+T’s Gilbert in history hot-seat

Danny Gilbert, managing partner at Gilbert + Tobin, has been selected as the safe choice for chairman of the National Museum of Australia. Gilbert told The Australian there would always be contested views of Australian history “lurking around”, but he planned to find the right balance.

Storm investors demand answers

A couple embroiled in the beleaguered Storm Financial collapse through their investments are now demanding an inquiry to stop the same thing happening again. "The bank's blaming Storm and Storm is blaming the banks and somebody is not telling the truth and hopefully ASIC will find out the truth,” they said.
