Therese Austin has been appointed to the Local Court, following a distinguished career as a member of the judiciary, the Law Society Northern Territory said.

Society president Maria Savvas congratulated Ms Austin on her new role, noting that she is widely respected by the profession.

"Ms Austin understands the issues that are unique to the Territory and her wealth of experience as a senior prosecutor in the Northern Territory and Western Australia will equip her well as a judge," Ms Savvas said.

"Ms Austin's appointment maintains the diversity of the Local Court judicial officers and her appointment is welcomed.

"On behalf of the legal profession, I offer our congratulations to her and look forward to her contribution to our justice system."
