The ACT Bar Association president, Prue Bindon, revealed that Gavin Howard has been appointed as the Bar’s latest senior counsel.

When announcing him as the state’s newest senior counsel, Bindon described Howard as of “outstanding professional standing and exemplifies the qualities required of a senior counsel”.

Since being called to the Bar in 2010, Howard has developed a strong reputation in family law, representing clients extensively in both divisions of the Family Court and Federal Circuit Court, as well as in numerous appeals before the Full Court.

He has experience representing clients as both appellant and respondent and has also appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court and the NSW Local Court.

In addition to his advocacy work, Howard currently serves as chair of the ACT Bar Association’s family law committee, is a member of the ACT Law Society’s family law committee and professional standards committee, and previously served on the ACT Bar Council in 2023.

In a statement, the ACT Bar described Howard as “diligent, highly skilled, and commands considerable respect as a leader of the family law Bar in the ACT”.

The ACT Bar also highlighted that Howard is an actively engaged member of the legal profession, mentoring junior barristers, contributing to policy development, and providing longstanding service through his work on the family law committee.

“I am delighted to announce Mr Howard’s appointment as senior counsel,” Bindon said.
