Two new senior counsel have been appointed to the Supreme Court of South Australia.
Simon Blewett SC and Benjamin Garnaut SC have both been appointed as senior counsel (SC) in the Supreme Court of South Australia.
These appointments follow extensive consultation with members of the legal profession, as well as senior legal and judicial officers across the state.
Blewett holds a bachelor of laws (first class honours) from the University of Adelaide and a master of laws from New York University.
Admitted to practice in 1990, Blewett joined the independent bar in 2017 and practices predominantly in employment, industrial relations, discrimination, and workers’ compensation matters, alongside a focused practice in administrative law and First Nations legal issues.
Garnaut also holds a bachelor of laws (first class honours) from the University of Adelaide and was admitted to practice in 2007.
Representing and advising the state of South Australia in a variety of proceedings across both primary and appellate hearings, his practice covers major commercial, civil, industrial, and public law matters, as well as administrative merits reviews, regulatory prosecutions, and coronial inquiries.
The Law Society of South Australia recognised the appointments, with president David Colovic saying that both people have demonstrated excellence as leaders throughout their careers.
“Both practitioners have demonstrated a level of excellence, integrity and legal acumen that distinguishes them as leaders in the profession,” Colovic said.
“Their elevation to the ranks of senior counsel is well deserved.
“To become a senior counsel, practitioners must not only demonstrate exceptional legal expertise, but [also] an unwavering commitment to the rule of law and the highest level of respectful behaviour.
“The Supreme Court has recognised these qualities in Mr Garnaut SC and Mr Blewett SC, who are both outstanding role models in the profession.”
