Joining from PwC as former national lead of digital and technology, new Melbourne-based partner Cameron Whittfield will move his significant expertise in emerging technology, cyber security and related legal issues to Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF).

This move to HSF marks a return for Mr Whittfield, who worked as a senior lawyer at Freehills prior to its merger with Herbert Smith. He has also worked as a partner with BigLaw firm Gilbert + Tobin for seven years before moving onto PwC.

Managing partner Carolyn Pugsley said she is thrilled to have Mr Whittfield join the team: “He is a renowned technology expert with over 25 years’ of experience advising clients on digital and technology issues, including cyber security, data governance, crisis management and technology M&A disputes.

“He’s also playing a leading role in supporting clients to navigate issues relating to emerging technologies like blockchain and AI. Clients have told us these issues require cross-practice capability and global perspective, and Cameron has a proven track record of being able to lead cross-practice, multi-regional teams to deliver exceptional client outcomes.”

On his return to HSF, Mr Whittfield said he is “delighted” he will soon begin helping the firm and its clients navigate the complexities and opportunities in technology.

“For me, HSF has always stood out for the quality of its legal advice and the excellence of its service delivery. I’m looking forward to making an important and enduring contribution,” Mr Whittfield said.

This appointment follows the relocation of partner Aaron White in January from its London office to Brisbane. Mr White has more than 17 years of experience advising in the international telecoms and tech sectors and is often guiding and counselling companies in evaluating, structuring and negotiating strategic technology.
