G+T managing partner Danny Gilbert is transitioning from managing partner of the BigLaw firm to become its chairman. The change in role will be effective as of July of next year.

Moreover, Sam Nickless — a partner and chief operating officer at the firm — is set to become its chief executive. Elsewhere, partner and board member Tim Gordon will become the firm’s executive partner, as well as continuing in his corporate advisory practice.

G+T’s current board chair, and long-term partner, Bill Spain, will continue to serve as a board member and as chair of the firm’s remuneration committee.

The reshuffle follows numerous appointments of new managing partners and chairs of BigLaw firms in Australia in the past year.

Earlier this month, Baker McKenzie named a new APAC chair; in October, Clyde & Co named a new Australian managing partner, as did HopgoodGanim, while Dentons reappointed its chair for a third term, and Holman Webb named a new chair in the same month; in September, McCullough Robertson appointed its first female chair; and earlier this year, MinterEllison named a new chair, as did Australian Family Lawyers and also IPH.

Speaking about the firm’s reshuffle at the top, Mr Gilbert explained that, earlier this year, G+T instigated a process to evolve its leadership model after he had informed the partners of his own plans for the back end of 2023 and beyond.

“I am very pleased with the outcome the partnership has reached,” he said.

“Tim has been with G+T since he was a junior lawyer and lives and breathes our culture. He will bring new and fresh perspectives from the coalface as a leading corporate partner to our leadership team.

“Sam and I have worked together closely in the management of the firm every day since he joined G+T in 2015. This new model, together with the many highly talented partners we have in the firm, will serve us very well.”
