The Albanese government has nominated Gina Cass‑Gottlieb, a former senior partner at Gilbert + Tobin, for a second five-year term as chair of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).
Gina Cass‑Gottlieb is set to serve another term as ACCC chair, for a five-year period from 20 March 2027, with the Albanese Government seeking state and territory agreement to recommend to Governor‑General Sam Mostyn that Cass‑Gottlieb be reappointed.
Cass‑Gottlieb, who served 25 years as a senior partner in competition and regulation at Gilbert + Tobin, was named as ACCC chair in December 2021, before assuming the role in March 2022.
In a statement, Treasurer Jim Chalmers called Cass‑Gottlieb an outstanding leader of the nation’s competition and consumer watchdog.
“Over the past four and a half years as Chair, Ms Cass‑Gottlieb has led the implementation of the most substantial merger laws in more than 50 years, and reforms to protect Australians from unfair trading practices,” the statement read.
“Under her leadership, the ACCC has won landmark law cases against supermarkets, airlines and digital platforms, and established the National Anti‑Scam Centre. Ms Cass‑Gottlieb’s reappointment will provide certainty for the ACCC’s ongoing leadership and strategic direction, as it implements reforms to product safety and digital platforms.”
In addition to her quarter century of service at G+T, Cass‑Gottlieb has also been a non‑executive member of the Reserve Bank of Australia’s Payments System Board, and was a member of the Financial Regulator Assessment Authority from September 2021 to March 2022.
