Gilbert + Tobin’s new practice group will combine three of the firm’s existing practice areas: technology and digital, intellectual property and fintech, payments and blockchain. Partner Sheila McGregor – who is currently the head of the technology and digital practice – will lead the combined technology and IP practice group.

According to the firm, technology has been part of the “DNA of the firm since the early days”. This new practice group brings all of its digital and data expertise together to provide a “new-tech” offering for clients in a modernised and efficient way.

In a statement to staff, managing partner Danny Gilbert said that he was “excited by the change and the possibilities it presents”.

“As the next frontiers of technology influence Australian business, it is crucial that we are in a strong position to remain as a leader on the diverse range of legal issues associated with this trend,” he said.

“The impact of AI, data, biotech, Web3, blockchain and crypto, decentralisation, quantum computing and other emerging technologies will continue to present opportunities for our clients. It makes sense to bring these streams together to ensure that G+T has a tech-focused practice that is the best in the market.”

Partner Michael Williams will lead the IP expertise area and partner Peter Reeves will lead the financial services regulation, blockchain and Web3 area. The new practice group structure is operational as of 1 July 2022.

This news follows a record round of appointments in G+T’s latest promotional round, wherein 14 new partners and 10 new special counsel were appointed effective 1 July, following the addition of a new corporate advisory partner in June this year.
