After appointing a new chief people officer last week, Gilchrist Connell has elevated two special counsel to principal lawyers in Brisbane.

Effective from 1 July, general liability special counsels Mariam Morad and Mitchell Hauser have been promoted to principal.

This news follows the firm’s appointment of one principal and two senior associates within its national health law practice earlier last week, the addition of two special counsel and four senior associates in mid-March, and the hiring of a health law principal in the same month.

Morad has extensive expertise in coverage issues and defence of public liability claims, specifically in relation to personal injury claims under Queensland’s Personal Injury Proceedings Act regime, and property claims. She has been at the firm for more than four years and has more than 17 years of legal experience, including working for major insurance and TPA companies in both Queensland and NSW, in statutory and commercial claims teams, and as in-house counsel.

Also, having worked at the firm for more than four years, Hauser has wide experience defending public and product liability claims, as well as professional indemnity disputes and workers’ compensation claims, with a specialised focus on injury liability and contractual liability. He has 13 years of legal experience, including considerable expertise in defending claims arising out of recreational activities, educational institutions, mining and construction accidents and in dealing with sensitive matters.

Speaking about the promotions, managing principal Richard Wood said he was “thrilled to congratulate Mariam and Mitch on their elevation to principal”.

“Their promotions reflect not only their exceptional legal skills and dedication to client service but also our firm’s commitment to recognising and rewarding homegrown talent. Both Mariam and Mitch have built strong reputations in their field, and their elevation enhances our ability to meet client needs in key areas of expertise,” he said.

“On a personal level, it is incredibly pleasing to see two of our own rise through the ranks and take this next step in their careers.”
